The Platform Netflix Explained

The Platform is one of the most powerful psychologically appealing movies that tries to convey the message of solidarity in a world where we have become so much greedy that we just think of ourselves and not about others. There are so many members of the society that we don’t even want to look at as if they don’t even exist in the world. These people have been represented through the character of Miharu in The Platform.

The Platform’s main protagonist is Goreng who has opted to get himself admitted to The Hole which is a vertical prison cell with a hole in every floor for the movement of food from the topmost cell to the bottom most cell. This is more like how a lift works from upwards to downwards. At the cell number zero , lavish food is cooked and served on to The Platform which then travels from zero to cell number three hundred and thirty three. As The Platform moves downwards , the people staying above eat up food more than they need to survive without thinking of the people below them.

The Platform reaches to about hundredth cell and becomes empty leaving behind only one option for people living below hundredth cell – to kill and eat each other’s flesh for survival. This is the basic storyline of the film. Now comes the trickt part.

Goreng has been promised a diploma in exchange for spending six months in The Hole, His cellmate in number forty eight and two hundred two – Trimagasi has been promised freedom after one year whereas Imoguiri , cellmate of Goreng in thirty three is promised relief from cancer. Imouguiri used to work for the administration of The Hole until she opted to be put into it. She tells Goreng about Vertical Prison Facility that their system is very strict about the rules. She tells the food is meant to reach the bottom most of The Hole but people eat up more than what is needed so no food reaches there.

The rules of the Hole are – The Platform reaches every cell and stops for one or two minute in which the prisoners can eat all the food they want to and then The Platform will go onto the next level. If anyone tries to keep food in their cells other than those two minutes – either the cell becomes too hot or too cold till they die. The second – no below 16’s are allowed in the Hole. The third – the prisoners’ cells were changed every one month.

Goreng through his course of time lives in many prisons and even gets to live in the sixth cell where he meets Baharat who is smart and strong and wants to go up to the zero level to escape the prisone but the people in cell number five don’t let him do so. This is the time when Goreng and Baharat decide that they will try to bring a change into The Platform by giving food in limits to every cell . They climb on The Platform and reach to cell number 333 which means there were approximately 666 prisoners in the hole ( as there were two in one cell).

They find Miharu’s child in the very last cell who was trying to hide. They show a sense of humanity by giving her the last portion of food they were going to send back as the message on The Platform. Baharat dies of a wound and then Goreng takes the child and goes below cell no.33 into the darkness where he eventually dies and the child is sent back as a message to the authority of the Hole that the system they have built is not perfect and therefore has it’s own flaws.

The film can be summed up through the saying ” A wise man spends his resources wisely so that others can also benefit. He who only thinks about himself could never get happiness as he will also suffer it’s consequences one day. ( the randomly assigning of cells to the prisoners i.e. those at the top will come down next month )”.
